Aspiring VFW Post commander inducted to Veteran’s Hall of Fame


A Queens veteran and Jackson Heights resident has been inducted to the New York State Senate’s Veterans Hall of Fame.

Luz M. Fernandez-Aviles, a Gulf War vet, was honored for her service by State Senator Jose Peralta. Fernandez-Aviles joined the Army Reserve in July 1988 and was honorably discharged in February 1997.

She was deployed to Saudi Arabia with her unit, the 142nd Transportation Det. Forscom Fc, in August 1990 for about eight months. She worked as a 77F Petroleum Supple Specialist.

Fernandez-Aviles has received an Army Commendation Medal (May 1991) a Certificate of Achievement (April and June 1991), an Army Achievement Medal (June 1993), a NYS Assembly Citation (June 2008) and a NYS Senate Liberty Award (June 2008).

“It means a lot to me to know that my service to this great country has been recognized,” she said. “I am truly gratefulĀ for this honor.”

Fernandez-Aviles continues serving veterans now at Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2813 in Woodside, where she hopes to become a post commander.
