The Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) of Queens, a Woodside-based organization, received a $75,000 check from State Senator Jose Peralta.
Last year, the nonprofit saved 49 families from foreclosure and helped another 29 families buy their homes with a down payment assistance program.
“Housing is paramount for healthy and sustainable neighborhoods,” said Roselyn Genao Estrella, executive director at NHS. “We currently face an affordable housing crisis in NYC, and these much-needed housing services are being threatened at a federal level by proposed draconian cuts.”
The funding will be used for the organization’s financial capacity and tenant assistance programs.
“Fighting for affordable housing is crucial to maintaining our neighborhoods. This is an organizing that is vital to helping people buy or maintain their properties,” Peralta said. “NHS changes people’s lives, so I am honored to have secured funding in this year’s budget for an organization that works to preserve our neighborhoods’ affordability.”
