Get excited, Sunnyside!
On Thursday, Sunnyside Shines is hosting a 1920s-themed celebration of the life and work of jazz great Bix Beiderbecke, an influential cornet player who lived his last days in Sunnyside.
The Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Concert will take place on August 3rd from 3 to 8 p.m. at Bliss Plaza, right off the 46th Street station.
Tis year’s concert will be headlined by local drummer and Bix aficionado Paul Maringelli. His tribute band, The Sunnyside Wolverines, is named for Bix’s first band.
The event will also feature a performance by Astoria Swing Dance and free ice cream from the Bliss Street Creamery. The creamery is holding a flavor contest for a new creation they will call “Bix Licks.”
“We are proud to be part of producing the Bix concert this year,” said Jaime-Faye Bean, executive director of Sunnyside Shines. “It’s a vibrant annual tradition that brings our community together in a spirit of neighborhood pride and fun, and helps our very global community connect with the history of our home.”
The jazz concert is part of Sunnyside Shines’ Summer Thursdays in Bliss Plaza, which brings together local community members, businesses, live music, free activities and dance performances, all under the 7 train station at 46th Street.
